How Earthquakes Happen
Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural disasters. They occur when there is a sudden release of energy in the Earth’s crust that creates seismic waves.
The Earth’s crust is made up of several large pieces called tectonic plates. These plates are constantly moving, although very slowly. When two plates collide, pull apart, or slide past each other, stress builds up along the fault lines.
When the stress becomes too great, the rocks along the fault line break or shift suddenly, releasing enormous amounts of energy. This energy travels through the Earth in the form of seismic waves, causing the ground to shake. The point where the earthquake originates is called the focus or hypocenter, while the point directly above it on the Earth’s surface is called the epicenter.
The strength of an earthquake is measured using the Richter scale. Earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.0 or higher are considered major earthquakes and can cause significant damage.
